Overview
Today we will present some ideas for incorporating chemical and biological
concepts into the high school science curriculum. We will be focusing on three themes where computational chemistry can aid in the understanding of chemical concepts:
- Structure and properties
- Spectra
- Thermodynamics of reactions
We will be exploring various
ways to examine biological and chemical data using both real physical models
as well as computer generated ones. We will also suggest lesson plans that
basic chemical concepts as well as data exploration.
We will accomplish this by:
- Introduction to online resources for computational chemistry (webMO) and visualization.
- Introduction to free web accessible databases that let you browse bioinformatic
data ( gene sequences and protein structures)
- Tools for visualizing protein structures and protein sequence information.
- Ideas for Lesson plans that can be used in the classroom using these data
resources.
